NEW Recycling Facility drop-off NOW OPEN! 1829 Euterpe St.
New Orleans between OC Haley & Baronne.
The Euterpe Recycling Center (“ERC”) is a recently established Recycling Drop Off Facility located at 1829 Euterpe St. in the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. The ERC’s goal is to facilitate the collection of materials for Recycle. As a neighborhood collection center, proceeds from Recycling will be applied to the Facility’s operating costs and the remainder to the OC Haley Main Street Design Team. The collection center is currently sponsored by the OC Haley Main Street Design Committee and Eco Green Clean.
“The Main purpose of Recycling materials in our community is to create an environment that discourages waste.”
Recently, Motorola released the first mobile phone made using plastics from recycled water bottles. Plastic recycling affects a range of products, from drink containers to shopping bags to pipes. Plastic is almost always the product of petroleum, a non-renewable resource. This makes recycling plastic even more important. Metals like steel and aluminum make up everyday products that we all use. In fact, steel is the most recycled material in North America, and it can be infinitely recycled and turned into new steel products. Metal products like aluminum cans are also big players in the recycling game. Aluminum cans are the most valuable beverage containers to recycle and are the most recycled consumer product in the U.S. today. (Information from Earth911.com)
The ERC generates output in three areas:
A) Provides a facility to collect and consolidate recyclable materials.
B) Helps stimulate activity and investment in a disadvantaged, impoverished neighborhood.
C) Promotes the concept and economic viability of Recycling.
The ERC currently receives ONLY PLASTICS and ALUMINUM CANS. Due to costs of infrastructure building, we cannot provide covered and secure receptacles to protect other Recyclable materials. The ERC provides this service FREE OF CHARGE to the consumer and wants to maintain this service to the community.
The ERC will provide the OC Haley neighborhood with Activity, Commerce, and Awareness:
Activity: People from Magazine Street to Downtown to Louisiana Ave. are coming from adjacent neighborhoods to use the facility for free. We need to market our free service to more businesses and residents within the 3-5 mile radius.
Commerce: The ERC can and will generate a net profit to continue its operation, expansion and efficiency within the OC Haley corridor. The more business activity in the neighborhood, the more the other businesses and non-profit will succeed in reaching established goals.
Awareness: New Orleans need to begin thinking and acting in a different way when it comes to waste. Once people participate in recycling, the more alert they will be about waste and the amount of waste we generate on a daily basis.
Being able to provide this service to the neighborhood FREE OF CHARGE and at the same time contributing to the OC Haley Main Street Design Committee makes this progress nothing less than equitable.
The “Long Term Outcome”
The OC Haley corridor has a place in history as a once thriving commercial district stretching from Washington Avenue all the way to Howard Avenue. Recent investment and improvement activity along this corridor is evidence of a possible comeback.
The survival of our city and our region depends on the survival of our neighborhoods. The revival of the OC Haley corridor is an inner city neighborhood in dying need. The ERC can bring this asset one step closer to being the viable area is once was and should be.
